I Pod guilty pleasures
By David Blampied
It seems the older I get the less concerned I am with making an ass out of myself publicly; all though I stop short of scratching my ass standing on line at the movies.
I have a commute, so I am in my car for at least 2 hours a day so I have a very intimate relationship with my i pod. There is an eclectic and broad range of music on it, as well as some interesting pod casts.
My favorite pod cast is The Ricky Gervais show. If you haven’t listened to it or seen it during its short run on HBO (video/cartoon) I highly recommend it.
A free and occasional podcast from Ricky Gervais, featuring Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington.

It occurred to me recently that there is a lot of music on my i pod that I have to confess is embarrassing to admit publicly. So, as long as someone gets a laugh at my expense this public confession will be worth it. I can safely assume that I’m not the only one with guilty i pod pleasures so I encourage anyone to add to the list of embarrassing digital content on their i pods on any other mobile devices, Blackberry’s, Droids, whatever.
Let’s just get right to worst of it. The first on my list is probably one of the most embarrassing:
Embarrassing song one:
“Looks Like We Made It” by Barry Manilow
Pretty gay, but let’s just be honest this guy can write a good tune, give me a break. Just for the record when I do listen to this song I’m not dabbing tears from my eyes with a tissue. If my eyes start to swell with tears I just use my ascot to dry them, cut me some slack I just like the song.
Number two:
Bee Gees - How Deep Is Your Love (live, 1998)
Somehow having the “live” version makes it less queer. But still, it’s a great tune. I can only take so much of Andy Gibb’s falsetto in one sitting. Nothing will get you car jacked quicker in the wrong neighborhood when you come to a red light with this classic rocker obstreperously blasting from your car speakers.
Number Three:
All of the rest of the Bee Gees songs I have on my i pod:
Stayin' Alive
Night Fever
Number Four:
Carpenters, “Close To You”
Wow, the only thing gayer than this would be The Trolley by Judy Garland. ( No it’s not on my i pod, I tunes didn’t have it) I just am asking to be beat up by having this song on my i pod, and I would deserve it.
“The Cheesy stuff”
It’s not just the outright.well…queer music on my i pod I have a fair amount of really cheesy songs that just have had their short moment of relevance long ago.
Number Five:
Aldo Nova – Fantasy
Six:
Chumbawamba – Tubthumping (What the hell was I thinking?)
Seven:
Philip Bailey & Phil Collins - Easy Lover
Eight:
John Denver - Annie´s Song
OK, this one is a classic but talk about cheese!! This song is a big block of government cheese.
Nine:
Mozart Edition: Complete Works (170 CD Box Set) [Box set]
Pardon me, do you have ant grey poupon mustard? OK I’m just not this sophisticated but I do “feel” smarter listening to this. Usually followed by AC/DC’s Highway to Hell album after I have my fill of Mozart.
Well that’s about the worst of it, now it’s out there for the world to see. In my defence there is no Wham, no Boy George, no George Michael no Ricky Martin. But still it’s pretty bad. All I can say is I’m probably not alone, I’m sure if everyone opened up and were honest about whats on your i pod I’m not the only one. Well I have some tears to clean from my collection of ascots.
